Day One in Ethiopia

Our first day in Ethiopia. We spent the entire day touring the region west of Addis Ababa. We saw Ambo, Gafersa, Wonchi Crater Lake, Wellisso town and Negash Lodge where we saw our first monkeys in the wild!


The day was amazing. We had one harrowing adventure when our tour drove down a very steep ravine to Wonchi Crater Lake. I think he drove farther down than usual and getting back up the hill wasn't so easy. He was driving a stick shift SUV, and we gripped the seat while the car slid down the hill when the gears wouldn't engage. Finally the guide suggested we get out of the car while the driver worked it up the hill, and we were more than happy to oblige.


I was surprised just how much the high altitude affected us too. A climb up a hill that didn't look that daunting would leave us panting in exhaustion.
